FOCUS ON THE MUSIC
FOCUS ON THE MUSIC
Tuning of Ford Focus Instruments
BRENTWOOD, Essex, 28 January, 2007 - Ford's latest advertising campaign will focus on the music when it's aired in the UK from 4th February.
In a clever feat of musical ingenuity, an orchestra playing instruments created entirely from car parts performs the soundtrack to the new Ford Focus television commercial.
This harmonious masterpiece is the work of two American composers who have taken the concept of car sounds to the extreme. Hollywood film composer Craig Richey and New York sound designer Bill Milbrodt turned 21 parts from the new Ford Focus into musical instruments and arranged them to be played by an orchestra.
Milbrodt’s team took apart a Ford Focus five-door hatchback that had, literally, just come off the production line. “When we got it to the mechanics shop, it had less than a mile on the clock. We took the doors and fenders off, but we had the body shell intact and we later cut out of that the parts we wanted,” said Bill Milbrodt.
By the time the orchestra had been assembled for the photo shoot at Universal Studios in California, Milbrodt’s team had constructed 31 instruments. Each has a name that instantly identified its origins, such as the Transmission Case Cello-Dulcimer, Clutch Guitar, Rear Suspension Spike Fiddle, Fender Bass, Hatchback Kick Drum, Handheld Gear Tambourine and Door Harp.
So what does music played by car parts sound like? Tune onto ITV on 4th February to find out!

What was your first truck?
My First truck was an 64 Ford regular cab long bed. It was tan in color. The steering wheel was semi horizontal like a city bus. I bought it from my brother for $100.00 because it wouldn't start. I pushed it to the garage around the corner and for $26.00 I got it running. I traded a guy a tank of gas for the stereo in his car so I had tunes. Sometimes when I was driving it would just stall and I would have to get out, take a screwdriver and tap the carburetor with the handle because the float would get stuck. A couple of taps and I was "on the road again." I had a lot of great times in that Ford truck. I miss that truck. I want one just like it again!

Tire Service-Direct Ford Parts
Tire Service
Keeping your tires balanced, rotated regularly, properly aligned and inflated to the correct pressure are all part of making sure tire tread wears evenly and doesn’t create any weak spots in your tires. You’ll be at a lower risk for skidding or poor handling, which could be dangerous in an emergency.
Spotting Worn Tires
You might need new tires if you notice any of the following:
Tread worn down to less than 1/16"
Narrow strips of smooth rubber across the tire tread
Bulges in the tire
Cracks or separation in the tire
Foreign objects puncturing the tires
Slipping or handling poorly in wet or icy conditions
Tires are more than six years old
If any of these symptoms occur, you should visit your local Ford or Lincoln Mercury Dealership immediately for a tire inspection.
Keeping Your Tires Performing at Their Best
The best thing you can do for your tires is to get scheduled maintenance at the Dealership. Every vehicle maintenance schedule includes:
Tire inspection at every appointment
Tire rotations every 5,000 miles
Inspect wheel ends for play and noise every 15,000 miles
Lubricate 4x2 front wheel bearings, replace grease seals and adjust bearings every 60,000 miles
Regular maintenance will help extend the mileage of your tires and allow our technicians to spot any problems before they become serious.
In between visits, you can keep your tire pressure adjusted to the right level to make sure you get the most out of your tires. This can help improve your gas mileage up to 3 percent (source: www.fueleconomy.gov ).
Check your owner’s guide for vehicle-specific information on caring for your tires.

Direct Ford Parts-F150 Views
The Ford F-150 is America's annual best seller, moving more units than anything else since Jimmy Carter was president. It's also one of the most challenged when it comes to cutting through the air, although we know there's worse. If the F-150 is going to clear the hurdle of new CAFE regs, that's going to change: its combined 16.5 mpg won't make it any friends come 2020.
Ford designers, led by North American Design Director Peter Horbury, are already looking at ways to make the next generation F-150 more aerodynamic, despite the all-new 2009 Ford F-150 having just debuted. The problem is, there simply aren't many options for making a difference: the only two components are the giant block of a passenger compartment and the massive drag-creating void of a bed behind it. Ford design did attempt to go a little aero with the front end of the 10th generation 1997-2003 F-150, but that, frankly, wasn't what people expected from an American pickup.
And Horbury mentions those expectations as problem. Discussing the idea of moving the windshield forward, he said "Nissan has a hard time trying to sell people that idea, but maybe the time has come." While there could arguably be greater reasons for Nissan's difficulty in capturing truck share with the Titan, it is well known that pickup truck buyers are a knowledgeable group who know what they want. Dynamic aero aids, then, could be on the cards. An F-150 with a Carrera GT-style retractable wing? Or perhaps a Kenworth-like sleeper cab over the rear passengers?

ONE-OF-A-KIND 2008 FORD SHELBY GT500KR DRIVES EXCITEMENT AT BARRETT-JACKSON AUCTION ON SATURDAY
• Ford and Shelby Automobiles to auction one-off Shelby GT500KR featuring a full glass roof to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
• Ford Racing and Patrick Dempsey to auction off his No. 156 Ford Mustang FR500C, which the star raced in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge series
Team Shelby – A one-of-a-kind 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR will go on the block at this year’s Barrett-Jackson auction: the only “King of the Road” model to feature a full glass roof. Continuing a Ford and Shelby tradition of charitable giving, proceeds from the auction will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
“Barrett-Jackson is an ideal venue to launch and sell Ford’s premier models,” said Robert Parker, Ford car marketing manager. “It’s the ultimate platform for selling the world’s most remarkable cars, and we’ve created a unique GT500KR just for the occasion.”
Barrett-Jackson will feature an unprecedented stable of muscle cars, led by a vintage Mustang from each year in which performance legend Carroll Shelby and Ford Motor Company produced the street-ripping 1960s classics. The highlight of the crop will be Mr. Shelby’s personal 1969 GT500 convertible, followed by a pristine 1967 GT500 originally gifted by Carroll to his son, Mike Shelby.
Muscle car enthusiasts are sure to tune in on SPEED TV this Saturday to watch Ford continue to lead the muscle car wars.
Shelby GT500KR with Glass Roof
The 540-horsepower Shelby GT500KR on the block at Barrett-Jackson is a unique rendition of the most powerful factory-built Mustang ever. Shelby GT500KR production began in Las Vegas on Jan. 11, Carroll Shelby’s 85th birthday. The one-of-one ebony black GT500KR up for auction will feature the same full glass roof that is being offered as an option on the 2009 V-6 Mustang and Mustang GT models only.
The glass roof provides a third roof option for customers and responds to their growing desire for more natural light. The glass is tinted, which reduces both infrared rays and vehicle cool down time by 50 percent. Production of large sunroofs has increased nearly 200 percent in North America since 2003, according to Just-autos.com.
While the Shelby GT500KR coupe features racing stripes over the roof, the unique glass roof on the auction model features stripes etched directly into the glass.
“Barrett-Jackson will be a rare opportunity for one lucky bidder to own a Shelby GT500KR with a glass roof, a car no one else can even buy,” said Carroll Shelby. “It’s been too long, but I’m very excited to have the ‘King of the Road’ back.”
“Only Ford Motor Company and Shelby American have sold more genuine Ford-powered Shelby vehicles than the Barrett-Jackson auction over the past 36 years,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. “I'm proud that Ford and Carroll Shelby chose to sell a one-of-a-kind 2008 Shelby GT500KR coupe at our auction, where only the finest, authentic Shelby vehicles are offered to the public.”
Patrick Dempsey’s Ford Mustang FR500C on the Block Saturday
In another exciting development, Ford Racing and Patrick Dempsey, the star of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” also will auction the actor’s No. 156 2005 Ford Mustang FR500C.
Dempsey drove the car in the 2007 Grand-Am KONI Challenge series for Hyper Sport Racing, a team he co-owns. Since its debut in 2005, the Mustang FR500C has earned seven poles, 10 wins, 92 top ten finishes and 25 podium appearances. Featuring a Ford Racing 5.0-liter Cammer R50 engine, it continues to be the road racing car of choice.
Dempsey will be on stage as bidders vie for this unique race Mustang. The winning bidder also will also receive a helmet, gloves, shoes, hero card and DVD box set of the third season of “Grey’s Anatomy” signed by Dempsey. In addition, the winner will enjoy a track day with Hyper Sport Racing and a day for two at the Ford Racing High Performance Driving School at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT.
Ford Exhibit Celebrates Speed
Building on a valued partnership, Ford plans to remain a key automotive sponsor of The Barrett-Jackson Auction series as a third venue is added in Las Vegas this October. As part of this sponsorship, Ford will bring interactive elements to Barrett-Jackson, including a drifting track, racing simulators and a dyno-simulated drag racing display.
This year, Ford will add a life-size Mustang collector’s display which showcases a ‘Steed for Every Need,’ along with a new “Built Ford Tough” tent that houses Ford’s feature vehicles. Consumers also can look forward to a few surprises. “We have found that experiential elements allow us to create a lot of memories for our current and future customers,” said Parker.
Ford, Barrett-Jackson and Shelby: $1.7 Million Raised for Charity
During the past three years, Ford and Carroll Shelby have raised more than $1.7 million dollars for charity. Last year, the first 2007 Shelby GT Mustang was auctioned off at a winning big of $600,000. In 2006, an early production 2007 Shelby GT500 also sold for $600,000.

Durable Ford Auto Parts
Durable Ford Auto Parts
By Marissa Hawke
Ford is among the many light trucks and sports utility vehicle makers to be known worldwide. They are not only well-known, but the company also enjoys the respect it gets from being the top name when it comes to producing durable vehicles. They have savored many praises and received many awards for the bakkies they have made and for the quality parts they put in.
Mustang and Ranger are among the many known makes of Ford that has received a lot of appreciation and warm welcomes from car enthusiasts. Because of this, the Ford Auto Parts have also been known to represent the qualities Ford is mostly known for – endurance, longevity, and durability. The company has already stood for more than a century already, proving that they indeed offer these qualities that seem to be already synonymous with them.
Aside from producing light trucks, they also create vehicles along the line of luxury and comfort. That is why the Ford Auto Parts are both durable and elegant looking. These parts, although they were made to last for a long time still couldn't win over the test of time. When that happens, be sure to replace it with new Ford Auto Parts so that it could continue on serving owners transportation needs. There are a lot of dealers out there who offer quality Ford Auto Parts because besides the obvious reason of replacing them, some Ford owners love to maintain their old Ford models. The only way they could preserve such beauty is to replace the worn out parts with new one and experience a whole new performance.
Ford does not only give priority to its major parts because they also put high emphasis on small parts such as the Ford Mirror. This is because they know that their Ford power Mirrors also contribute to the overall look and performance of the vehicle. A Ford Mirror may seem to be a minor part but without their function, drivers may feel blind while driving down the streets. This part provides drivers eyes on the sides and at the rear of the car. They serve as a guide while making a turn, maneuvering as in parking, and when changing lanes. Because of that, automakers improved this part, making them a power mirror. Ford followed suit with their own set of Ford Power Mirrors.
The Ford Mirror should then be cared for and drivers must make sure that these are always on the proper angle. Failure to do so could even mean a guaranteed minor road accident. If there comes a time that the Ford Mirror and other Ford Auto Parts become broken, then a stop to trusted dealers is the solution. A Ford wouldn't be a Ford without the quality parts that these cars are accustomed to have. Ford owners better not forget this.

Henry Ford Learning Institute
It's essential that more students make a successful transition between school and the workplace if our nation is to remain a global leader in the creation of high-wage, high-skill jobs and industries.
We joined with The Henry Ford to establish the Henry Ford Learning Institute (HFLI) as a nonprofit educational organization. Focusing on communities where traditional public schools have struggled, we developed a network of small high schools located in America's premier cultural institutions and community organizations. HFLI's mission is to build and sustain innovative hands-on relationships that make education a community endeavor.
Connecting Schools and Communities
HFLI is an innovative nonprofit organization dedicated to the belief that education reform cannot take place within an educational system that isolates students and teachers from the community and separates teaching and learning from the real world.
HFLI creates innovative small schools that bring national and local community resources into the educational process and help to create thriving communities where education is everyone's responsibility.
We envision a future where public education becomes a truly public endeavor, engaging a community to create vibrant educational models, leverage underutilized local resources and remove boundaries between learning and the real world.
Henry Ford Academy
The Henry Ford Academy (HFA), which opened in 1997 in Dearborn, Michigan, is the nation's first charter school developed jointly by a public education, a global corporation and a world-renowned nonprofit cultural institution.
Ford contributes substantial input to HFA-Dearborn&EEMM;but the true power of the Academy lies in the direct, hands-on involvement of more than 400 individual Ford employees who serve as tutors, mentors, lecturers, curriculum advisors, student project sponsors, project partners and coaches for thousands of hours each year. Ford volunteers serve all 390 students and their families, as well as the 32 Academy teachers, administrators and support staff.
In addition, as HFA-Dearborn's host institution, The Henry Ford provides students with a truly "public" high school experience that has a tremendous impact on their personal and academic development. The students' presence on the Ford Motor Company campus exposes them to a much broader spectrum of people than they would encounter in a traditional, stand-alone high school. Students are frequently called upon to provide assistance to visitors, collaborate with museum staff on joint events and serve as unofficial ambassadors of the organization.

2008 Ford Edge Injects New Energy And Features In Ford's Crossover Lineup
The Ford Edge offers a car-like driving experience with the versatility of an SUV. For more information, go to Fordvehicles.com.
DEARBORN, August 31, 2007 - The Ford Edge crossover continues to energize the Ford brand in the hottest vehicle segment in the United States. Ford's new crossover distinguishes itself with bold, American design, a flexible interior, dynamic driving character and a host of innovative features.
The Edge delivers spirited performance, fuel efficiency and a smooth, quiet ride from its class-exclusive 265-horsepower V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. Edge also delivers on safety, with a host of standard safety features including Ford's exclusive AdvanceTrac® with RSC®. Edge boasts a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and achieved front and side driver five-star crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Edge is available in SE, SEL and Limited trims. All Edges are manufactured at Ford's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada.
New-for-2008 Features Set Edge Apart from the Competition
The 2008 Edge lives up to Ford Motor Company's commitment to deliver more vehicles that customers want to buy with features such as:
Ford Sync™ - an industry-exclusive, voice-activated, hands-free, in-car communications and entertainment system. The available system, developed in collaboration with Microsoft, fully integrates mobile phones and media players into the vehicle using Bluetooth technology and USB connectivity.
Voice-activated navigation system. The available voice-activated DVD-based navigation system features a 6.5-inch touch screen designed for improved clarity. It incorporates text-to-speech technology that reads and communicates directions and street names in English, Spanish and French.
Power liftgate. This available new feature provides easy access to the rear cargo area and can be opened with the key fob or with a switch mounted on the dash. A new design for the liftgate handle also allows for easier access to the vehicle's rear cargo area.
Edge offers even more choices for 2008 with the addition of the Limited Series, a new Interior Appearance Package that includes leather-trimmed seats with premium red seating surfaces and contrast stitching, a new 18-inch wheel option and new class-exclusive 20-inch wheels. Four new colors are available for 2008: Vapor Silver Clearcoat Metallic, Light Ice Blue Clearcoat Metallic, Dark Ink Blue Clearcoat Metallic and White Sand Tri-Coat.
For added convenience, Edge now comes with a one-touch up-and-down driver window and an available Homelink universal garage door opener.
Additional available infotainment features include factory-installed SIRIUS® Satellite Radio and a DVD entertainment system with a drop-down 8-inch screen and two pairs of wireless headphones.
Class-Exclusive Panoramic Vista Roof™
Edge's available panoramic Vista Roof™ opens up a whole world of possibilities. The large glass moon roof provides a grand view of the sky and a sense of freedom that accentuates Edge's sporting nature.
The roof features a large 27.3-inch by 29.4-inch forward panel that offers tilt and slide opening, and a 15.75-inch by 31.3-inch fixed rear glass panel. The oversized front panel provides open-air touring. Close the forward roof and the enormous skylights allow natural light to flood the cabin while protecting the cabin from the elements. Twin power-operated cloth shades can be closed simultaneously to block 100 percent of ultra-violet rays.
Safety Begins with Accidents Avoided
Edge customers will find peace of mind in Ford's comprehensive approach to safety, including standard active safety technology and comprehensive passive safety features.
Ford's AdvanceTrac® with RSC®, standard on Edge, is the industry's only electronic stability control system that uses two gyroscopic sensors to monitor both yaw and roll motions. Monitoring both motions allows for yaw-control enhancements, providing class-leading side-slip and roll stability control.
Edge offers several layers of side-impact protection, including solid unibody construction with cross-member ladder frame, a reinforced greenhouse and energy-absorbing side door trim.
Other standard safety features include:
Ford's exclusive Safety Canopy™ side curtain air bags. Designed for both rows of seats, this feature utilizes roll-fold technology to efficiently deploy the air bag when an occupant's head is resting against the side glass. In the event of a crash, the roll-fold bag will deploy between the occupant's head and the side of the vehicle.
Ford's Personal Safety System®. This suite of safety features includes dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, thorax side air bags for front seat occupants, safety belt pretensioners, seat weight sensing system for the passenger seat and crash severity sensing.
Ford's BeltMinder safety belt reminder for driver and front passenger. Edge also comes equipped with such standard features as child safety locks on the rear doors, the LATCH child safety restraint system and Ford's tire pressure monitoring system.
Engaging Driving Dynamics Set Edge Apart
Edge's modern car-based foundation facilitates its excellent driving character. The front suspension features MacPherson struts and an isolated subframe, firmly attached in six locations. To further smooth out the ride, hydro-bushings are used.
The four-link independent rear suspension uses stamped steel control blades for precise suspension tuning. The rear dampers are mounted as far outboard as possible in the vehicle and behind the wheel center to improve ride and handling. Edge comes standard with four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes.
Edge's 3.5-liter V-6 engine features a strong, lightweight, die-cast aluminum block and lightweight 4-valve-per-cylinder heads for smooth operation at high rpm. A 10.3:1 compression ratio and close-coupled catalysts will help it meet stringent ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) II regulations.
The 6-speed automatic transmission uses a wide 6.04:1 gear ratio to deliver good fuel economy and performance. Short first and second gears provide impressive launch and acceleration, while the tall overdrive gears deliver 7 percent better fuel economy than a 4-speed automatic.
Edge's available intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system was tuned with an emphasis on performance while offering confident all-weather driving. By constantly monitoring and predicting traction, the system delivers torque to all four wheels, even before the wheels begin to slip. An active on-demand coupler can deliver the precise amount of torque to the rear wheels. Paired with available AdvanceTrac® traction control, intelligent AWD can transfer torque front to rear and side to side.
Impressive Interior Quietness
Edge's well-rounded, modern performance extends to impressive refinement, enhancing the driving experience. In fact, testing has proven that the Edge's interior is quieter than the Lexus RX350.
Engineers spent hundreds of hours fine-tuning Edge's interior ambiance when the vehicle launched. For example, the side mirrors were specifically designed to reduce wind noise. Even the radio antenna was scrutinized. By modifying the pitch and height of the spiral by tenths of a millimeter, wind noise was reduced by as much as 2 decibels.
Modern Design with a Dramatic Edge
The Edge's bold American design is defined by its distinctive three-bar chromed grille. An aggressively raked windshield and fast-sloping back window with high-mounted rear spoiler accentuate the feeling of motion. Quad-beam headlamps and a "powerdome" hood accentuate the purposeful front-end look.
The wheels are pushed to the corners, giving Edge its powerful, yet graceful stance. The raised beltline emphasizes strong, sculpted shoulders formed around sharp wheel arches. Matte black lower front and rear fascias and side rocker panels emphasize Edge's sporty character.
Edge's modern design flows into the interior, evident in the instrument panel and distinctive center stack. The center stack design incorporates two, 9-inch by 2-inch vertical vents that bracket the audio and climate-control switches. Available all-leather seating surfaces feature contrast stitching inspired by the fashion industry.
Adaptable, Flexible Design
2008 Ford Edge: Interior Appearance Package.
Edge is designed to fit the customer's need for style as well as cargo space and adaptability. The large center console uses a removable divider and tray to organize the space both vertically and horizontally for secure storage of everything from a laptop computer and handbag to coins and MP3 players.
The Edge has four power points, three within the driver's reach, along with a MP3 audio jack. Small slots molded into the side of the console keep phone and MP3 cords neat and organized. The console lid has a ticket clip, two penholders and a tissue holder.
Edge comfortably seats five, offering available six-way power, heated, adjustable front seats and best-in-class adult headroom and legroom for the second row. The reclining 60/40-split second-row seat folds to provide a level load floor for carrying equipment in the large cargo area. Edge can transport items as long as 8 feet with the available fold-flat front passenger seat. Each rear seat can be folded manually using an industry-first single-hand release or automatically with an available EasyFold™ electro-mechanical remote release accessible from the rear cargo area.

My car failed an emissions test, now what?
You try to figure out why it failed the test, get the problem fixed and then try to pass the test again. This may or may not be an ordeal depending on what’s wrong with your engine, how easily the problem is to diagnose and repair, and whether or not you flunk a retest.
The worst case scenario is spending a lot of money on repairs only to find that they didn’t solve your emissions problem. You bounce back and forth between the repair facility and test station, wasting time and money all the while cursing the incompetent mechanics who tried to fix your car and the bureaucrats who created the clean air emissions testing program.
But in states or municipalities where periodic emissions testing is required, you cannot get your vehicle registration or emissions compliance sticker unless you either pass the test or meet the "waiver" requirements.
A "waiver" is a kind of loophole that allows some vehicles to get past an emissions test even when they can’t meet the applicable emission requirements. Some would argue this isn’t fair to those whose vehicles meet the requirements and pass the test, but nobody said emissions testing was fair.
Waivers were created by politicians who recognized the fact that many people (voters) can’t afford to pay for all the repairs that might be required to pass an emissions test. So credit is given for a good faith effort and for spending a fixed dollar amount on repairs. Once you’ve spent up to the limit, you get an automatic pass.
Waiver limits vary from one state to another, and some vary by the model year of vehicle. Waiver limits typically range from $75 up to $150, but may be as much as $450 on new vehicles in some states). So if you don’t know what the applicable waiver limit is on your vehicle, ask. Unless you’re a real zealot about clean air, there’s no legal reason to spend a dime more than the waiver limit on emission repairs.
How To Improve Your Odds Of Passing An Emissions Test
The best way to improve the odds of passing an emissions test is to maintain your vehicle. A well-maintained engine is usually a clean engine as far as emissions are concerned.
Changing the spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve and oil regularly (or just before an emissions test), checking ignition timing and adjusting the carburetor (if you have an older vehicle) can reduce emissions and greatly improve your chance of passing.
Also, filling up your fuel tank with gasoline that contains 10% ethanol alcohol (many premium grade fuels use alcohol as an octane booster) may help lower your emissions even more. Many areas now have "reformulated" gasoline that contains alcohol or MBTE that adds oxygen to the fuel to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions.
Just before the test, make sure your vehicle is at normal operating temperature. Take it out for a short spin down the expressway. This will heat up the oxygen sensor and catalytic converter to minimize emissions.

Did you Know?
In 1908 the Ford company initiated production of the celebrated Model T. Until 1927, when the Model T was discontinued in favor of a more up-to-date model, the company produced and sold about 15 million cars.
WHAT IS AN EGR VALVE AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
What is the EGR valve and what does it do?
When combustion temperatures exceed 2500 degree F., atmospheric nitrogen begins to react with oxygen during combustion. The result is various compounds called nitrogen oxides (NOX), which play a major role in urban air pollution. To reduce the formation of NOX, combustion temperatures must be kept below the NOX threshold. This is done by recirculating a small amount of exhaust through the "exhaust gas recirculation," or EGR. valve.
The EGR valve controls a small passageway between the intake and exhaust manifolds. When the valve opens, intake vacuum draws exhaust through the valve. This dilutes the incoming air/fuel mixture and has a quenching effect on combustion temperatures which keeps NOX within acceptable limits. As an added benefit, it also reduces the engine’s octane requirements which lessens the danger of detonation (spark knock).
The EGR valve consists of a poppet valve and a vacuum diaphragm. When vacuum is applied to the EGR valve diaphragm, it pulls the valve open allowing exhaust to pass from the exhaust manifold into the intake manifold. Some engines have "positive backpressure" EGR valves, while others have "negative backpressure" EGR valves. Both types contain a second diaphragm that modulates the action of the valve. This prevents the valve from opening unless there is a certain level of exhaust backpressure in the system. EGR valves are calibrated for specific engine applications. The wrong valve may flow too much or not enough exhaust and cause emission, driveability and detonation problems.
EGR valves do not normally require maintenance or replacement for preventative maintenance. But the valve can become clogged with carbon deposits that cause it to stick or prevent it from closing properly. Dirty EGR valves can sometimes be cleaned, but replacement is necessary if the valve is defective.
Some newer engines are so clean from a NOX emissions standpoint that no EGR valve is required.
Ported Vacuum Switch
Another component that may be a part of your vehicle’s EGR system is a "ported vacuum switch" (PVS), which may also be called a "thermal vacuum valve" or "temperature vacuum valve" (TVS). The switch controls the passage of vacuum that operates the EGR valve.
This device is a heat-sensitive switch that remains closed until the engine’s coolant reaches a certain temperature. The PVS screws into the intake manifold, thermostat housing or engine so the heat-sensing element is in contact with the engine’s coolant. Inside the switch is a wax plug that pushes a sliding plunger to uncover or block vacuum ports in the switch. As the engine heats up, the wax expands and pushes the plunger up until it uncovers or blocks the vacuum port. At this point, vacuum to the device that the switch controls is either applied or blocked. Severe engine overheating can damage the switch, making replacement necessary.
Vacuum Control Solenoid
A solenoid is another device that is often used to control vacuum to the EGR valve. A solenoid is a magnetic coil attached to a plunger that uncovers or blocks a vacuum port. The solenoid vacuum port may be normally open or closed depending on the application. When voltage is applied to the solenoid, the coil moves the plunger which either opens or blocks the vacuum port. Voltage to the solenoid may be routed through a relay or timer and is usually controlled by the engine computer on newer cars.
When used to control the vacuum to an EGR valve on a late model engine, the engine computer will wait to energize the solenoid until the engine is warm and is operating above a certain rpm.

What parts are generally replaced during a brake job, and why?
What parts are generally replaced during a brake job, and why?
A traditional brake job (if there is such a thing) usually means replacing the front disc brake pads, resurfacing the rotors, replacing the rear drum brake shoes, resurfacing the drums, bleeding the brake lines (replacing the old brake fluid with new and getting all the air out of the lines), inspecting the system for leaks or other problems that might require additional repairs, and checking and adjusting the parking brake.
Some brake jobs may also include new hardware for the drums (recommended), and rebuilding or replacing the wheel cylinders and calipers (also recommended). But because of the added expense, these items may not be included in the package price or may only be done if the brake system really needs them (as opposed to doing them for preventative maintenance).
Hardware includes things like return springs, holddown springs and other clips and retainers found in drum brakes. It may also include bushings, pins and clips on disc brake calipers. Springs lose tension with age and exposure to heat. Most experts recommend replacing the hardware when relining drum brakes to restore proper brake action. If weak springs are reused, the shoes may drag against the drums causing accelerated shoe wear, a pull to one side, brake overheating and possible drum warpage. Other hardware that is badly corroded or faulty (such as the self-adjusters) may prevent the shoes from maintaining the correct drum clearance (which increases the distance the brake pedal must travel as the shoes wear), or the parking brake from functioning properly.
It’s important to note that not all replacement linings are the same. There are usually several grades of quality in pads and shoes (good, better and best). The difference is in the ingredients that are used to manufacture the pads and shoes. The less expensive ones may cost less initially and save you a few dollars on your total bill, but you may not be happy with the way they wear and perform. All brake linings must meet minimum government safety standards. Even so, the cheaper grade of pads and shoes do not last as many miles as the premium grade of replacement linings, nor do they brake as effectively. They usually have a greater tendency to fade at high temperature and may increase the vehicle’s stopping distance somewhat. Noise may also be a problem with cheap linings. The best performance and value for your money, therefore, is with the best or premium grade OEM Genuine Parts. Choose these when the brakes are relined.

How do I know when my car really needs a brake job?
How do I know when my car really needs a brake job?
You need a "brake job" when your brake linings are worn down to the minimum acceptable thickness specified by the vehicle manufacturer or the applicable state agency in areas that set their own requirements. The only way to determine if new linings are required, therefore, is to inspect the brakes.
You may also need a brake job if you’re having brake problems such as grabbing, pulling, low or soft pedal, pedal vibration, noise, etc., or if some component in your brake system has failed. But if the problem is isolated to only one component, there’s no need to replace other parts that are still in perfectly good working order.
There is no specific mileage interval at which the brakes need to be relined because brake wear varies depending on how the vehicle is driven, the braking habits of the driver, the weight of the vehicle, the design of the brake system and a dozen other variables. A set of brake linings that last 70,000 miles or more on a car driven mostly on the highway may last only 30,000 or 40,000 miles on the same vehicle that is driven mostly in stop-and-go city traffic.
As a rule, the front brakes wear out before the ones on the rear because the front brakes handle a higher percentage of the braking load -- especially in front-wheel drive cars and minivans. So many service facilities advertise $59.95 brake job "specials" that replace the linings on the front brakes only. Doing the front brakes only is okay and can save you money as long as the rear brakes are in good condition. But if the rear brakes need attention, they should be relined too.
One of the problems with the brake specials you see advertised in the newspaper is that the price is very misleading. A person typically goes in expecting to spend $59.95 for a brake job, but usually ends up spending considerably more because the brakes need more than the minimum amount of work to restore them to like-new condition. The price of a brake job depends entirely on the work that needs to be performed. So any advertised special is not a firm price, but only an estimate of the least amount of money it might cost you to get your brakes fixed. A price should not be quoted until after the brakes have been inspected. Then and only then can an accurate determination be made of the parts that actually need to be replaced.

How Often Should I replace My Air Filter?
How often should I replace my air filter?
It’s hard to give a specific time or mileage figure because the life of the filter depends on how much crud it ingests. A filter that lasts 20,000 or even 30,000 miles on a vehicle that’s driven mostly on expressways may last only a month or two in a rural setting where the vehicle is driven frequently on gravel roads. Changing it annually or every 15,000 miles for preventative maintenance may be a good recommendation for the city driver, but not its country cousin.
Regardless of the mileage or time, a filter should be replaced before it reaches the point where it creates a significant restriction to airflow. But when exactly that point is reached is subject to opinion.
A slightly dirty filter actually cleans more efficiently than a brand new filter. That’s because the debris trapped by the filter element helps screen out smaller particles that try to get through. But eventually every filter reaches the point where it causes enough of a pressure drop to restrict airflow. Fuel economy, performance and emissions begin to deteriorate and get progressively worse until the dirty filter is replaced.
Many heavy-duty trucks have a "restriction" meter on the air filter housing that signals when the filter is dirty enough to need replacing. But lacking such a device, the best you can do is guess.
Removing the filter and holding it up to a light will show you how dirty it is. If it’s really caked with dirt, it obviously needs to be replaced. Trying to shake or blow the dirt out is a waste of time because too much of it will be embedded in the filter fibers.
NOTE: Many filters that appear to be dirty are in fact still good and do not really need to be replaced. So it’s up to you. If you think it’s dirty, replace it. If you don’t think it’s dirty enough to need replacing, then don’t.

Safer Driving-Direct Ford Parts
We've been working with the U.S. Department of Transportation and other automakers to develop vehicle collision avoidance technologies that may help keep everyone on the road safer.
Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication
We've been working with the Vehicle Safety Communications Two Consortium (VSC-2) to develop safety applications that allow vehicles to "talk" to each other and to the roadway. VSC-2 is a relationship that exists between the U.S. Department of Transportation and other automakers, including Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Toyota, DaimlerChrysler and Honda.
After successfully completing a project that demonstrated the feasibility of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road communication, VSC-2 will begin evaluating the following applications:
Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance System: Violation Warning—As a car, truck, SUV or other vehicle approaches a traffic light, the vehicle would receive a message from the traffic light with the signal phase (red, yellow or green) and the amount of time until the signal changes. The vehicle would use this information, together with the vehicle position and speed, to decide if a warning or some other safety countermeasure (such as brake assist) is appropriate.
Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications—VSC-2 members are working together to investigate the messages needed for vehicle-to-vehicle safety applications, including Electronic Emergency Brake Lights.
A vehicle with Electronic Emergency Brake Lights performing hard braking could send a message to vehicles behind it on the roadway, then those vehicles could warn their drivers, activate brake assist or even start automatic braking.
Building a Wireless Infrastructure for Vehicles
We're also participating in the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration National Coalition (VIINC). VIINC is working to deploy wireless technologies to support vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road safety communications. In addition to vehicle safety applications, these wireless technologies could be used for mobility and commercial applications such as e-payment for parking, tolling and gasoline purchases.
Through VIINC, the U.S. Department of Transportation plans to fund the roadside infrastructure. Equipment manufacturers would provide the wireless on-board equipment. The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed installing 250,000 dedicated short-range communications radio roadside transceivers nationwide by 2010.
ComCARE Alliance
We're a board member of the ComCARE Alliance, a nonprofit organization that encourages the establishment of wireless communication networks, infrastructure and technologies that enable emergency communications between the motoring public and public safety agencies.
The ComCARE Alliance is a coalition of the medical community; public health and safety officials; automobile, telematics and technology companies; safety groups and others.
RESPONSE Project
In Europe, we've been a leading contributor to the EU's "RESPONSE" project. RESPONSE was developed to ensure Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems are designed to be safe and consider the complex interaction of drivers and vehicle systems in multiple traffic situations.

Motorcraft Parts-Direct Ford Parts
Motorcraft® premium parts are the preferred choice of Ford Motor Company. From motor oil to transmission assemblies and everything in between, Motorcraft® parts provide exceptional quality and fit.
Brief History
During the first half of the 1900's, replacement vehicle parts were, by and large, an afterthought for most new vehicle manufacturers and most replacement parts available to owners were produced by aftermarket parts companies. But we wanted to change all that.
Ford Motor Company launched this effort in 1961 by acquiring the well-known and respected Electric Autolite Company, which was already producing numerous replacement parts for Ford vehicles. In 1972, the name was changed to Motorcraft®.
Today, Motorcraft® parts are designed, engineered and recommended by Ford Motor Company for installation on Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles.
